Somewhere between a conversation and a dream, Lunar Mansions beautifully stretches your sense of “acceptable” melody, time and texture. Featuring long-time long-distance collaborators, the group delivers the best of both worlds: intriguing unscripted explorations and highly developed melodic content. The free playing is sensitive enough to avoid the zero-gravity free-fall of most improvised music, and the composed elements are clever enough to eschew the blasé of instrumental rock.
It all makes sense when you combine the expressively volatile work of Canadian saxophonist Peter Van Huffel and the Melvin’s-eque driving force of Berlin’s Roland Fidezius on bass (both you know from the Berlin-based thrash-jazz trio Gorilla Mask) with the southern-fried adventure-jazz ramblings of Dan Nettles from Athens, GA, known for his ground breaking work as leader of the post-everything ensemble Kenosha Kid. Over the past decade each musician had worked with Dublin based drummer Sean Carpio in some form or fashion, whose ever tasteful percussion fills out the ensemble.
