Peter Van Huffel – Alto & Soprano Saxophones
Frank Paul Schubert – Alto & Soprano Saxophones
Meinrad Kneer – Bass
Christian Marien – Drums
This Berlin-based improvising quartet is based deeply in the roots of jazz, free-jazz, rock and contemporary classical music; and features four of Berlin’s strongest and most individual musicians. Peter Van Huffel (Gorilla Mask, Kronix, The Scrambling Ex) and Frank Paul Schubert (Grid Mesh, Foils, Fabric Trio) met shortly after Van Huffel’s move to Berlin in 2008 and soon thereafter began working together in a unique duo format featuring each musician on both alto and soprano saxophones. After years of intermittent performances, the duo thought to further develop their project by expanding into a larger formation. The stellar rhythm section of bassist Meinrad Kneer (Meinrad Kneer Quintet, Phosphorus Ensemble, Trio Baars/Kneer/Elgart) and drummer Christian Marien (Z Country Paradise, The Astronomical Unit, BROM) elegantly compliments the colourful and intense approach of the two saxophonists, making this an exciting and enticing collaborative ensemble, and an important addition to Berlin’s thriving music scene.
