Canadian saxophonist Peter Van Huffel and Belgian vocalist Sophie Tassignon have collaborated to form a truly unique new group, which delves into many spectrums of the improvised music world. Tassignon, renowned for her ability to sing “unsingable melodies” with her own individual style, performs with numerous groups around Europe including the Screaming Bitches and the Folk/Tassignon Quartet. She released her debut CD, “Moon Talk”, featuring her quartet Zoshia on Alone Blue Records in 2006. Van Huffel, an active performer on the New York, Canadian and European Jazz scenes, can be heard in all types of settings including his own New York based Quintet, last heard on their 2007 Fresh Sound Records release “Silvester Battlefield”. He can also be heard frequently with the improvised trombone, sax and drums trio Animal Forum featuring Samuel Blaser and Ziv Ravitz, and in multiple collaborations with musicians across the globe such as Berlin bassist Roland Fidezius and Belgian clarinetist Joachim Badenhorst.

Together with Canadian, New York-based bassist Michael Bates (Between the Lines, Green Leaf Records) and Swiss trombonist Samuel Blaser (Between the Lines, Fresh Sound/New Talent, Clean Feed Records), Van Huffel and Tassignon perform a variety of their own compositions, ranging from beautiful melodies, to complex and angular compositions, always stretching into improvisations that stretch the boundaries of jazz. The group’s debut CD, featuring original compositions by both band leaders and a unique interpretation of Vivaldi’s Cum Dederit, was released in the fall of 2008 on the renowned Portuguese label Clean Feed Records, hailed by All About Jazz NY as one of the five most important jazz labels in the world today.
